Because it seems so\nsimple, you may have grown up without anyone teaching you how to brush your\nteeth properly. Inadequate brushing leads to several short- and long-term\nconsequences for your health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to make sure you\u2019re not missing any steps, read\non to learn the right way to brush your teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Brush Your Teeth Properly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Use Pressure, But Not Too Much<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first mistake that many people make is using too little\nor too much pressure. Plaque sticks to your teeth and isn\u2019t easy to clean. With\ngentle brushing, you may not have enough force to clear it from your teeth or\ngums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, excessive abrasion can be bad for your\nteeth. While it will most certainly help with removing plaque, you can also\nremove enamel with extreme force. It shouldn\u2019t hurt when you brush. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brush Every Surface: Front, Back & Top<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most people know to brush the front of their teeth \u2013 after\nall, that\u2019s how you keep your teeth looking great for photos and first\nimpressions! But the other two major surfaces of your teeth, the top and the\nback, are just as vulnerable to bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because you chew with the top of your teeth, it\u2019s critical\nto adequately brush. Likewise, if you don\u2019t tilt the brush outward to clean the\nbackside of your teeth, bacteria will spread where it can subtly damage your\nteeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Skip Your Gums<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Learning how to brush your teeth properly means learning to\nbrush your gums as well! While your gums won\u2019t develop cavities, they will\nexperience inflammation. This inflammation is a reaction to the\nonset of gum disease.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brushing your gums is simple \u2013 just use the same gentle\npressure you do with your teeth. In most cases, it shouldn\u2019t hurt. Your gums\nmay bleed or be sensitive if you\u2019re already at the early stages of gum disease.\nDon\u2019t worry! Early gingivitis is easily reversible as long as you continue\nbrushing regularly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brushing Your Tongue Is Important Too!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Surprisingly, this core part of thorough brushing is often\noverlooked. Your tongue is just as much a part of your dental ecosystem as your\nteeth or gums. Bad breath is typically considered a general mouth hygiene\nissue, but it\u2019s often the result of bacteria left undisturbed on your tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few quick brushes back-to-front across your tongue is all\nit takes. You can use your regular toothbrush or purchase a dedicated tongue\ncleaner. They both work about the same as long as you brush consistently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Minutes Minimum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Do you use a timer when you brush? You may want to give it a\ntry! One of the biggest hurdles most people have with learning how to brush\ntheir teeth is taking the time to do it completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should be brushing for a full two minutes. Electric\ntoothbrushes often signal you with a buzz<\/a>, allowing you to focus on\nbrushing. Those using manual toothbrushes need to incorporate a timer or take\nextra care that they aren\u2019t brushing too quickly (or for too long!) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
